Point of view is very important in gaming. It just is. It's kind of a huge deal in forming the workings for your game's design. If building a game is done through layering, point of view is probably the thickest layer to work in.
Players will decide what parts of a game they will spend their most time at playing/doing. A quick configuration setting can remove a point of view entirely from their gaming style. In effect, they have changed the kind of game they are playing. This is all before any modifications are added to a game, which further alter what a game is (or will be) about.
